My Top 5 Books of All Time

Science fiction, horror, adventure, and historical fiction all have a place on my list. These are my five favorite books of all time, in order, with one honorable mention that deserves a spot here too.

1. Dune

Frank Herbert

A desert planet, a fiercely contested resource, and a struggle for power that reaches far beyond one family. Dune brings politics, religion, ecology, and survival together in a world with extraordinary depth. It takes the top spot on my list.

2. Neuromancer

William Gibson

A hacker drawn into a dangerous job, artificial intelligence, and a world where technology is tangled up with life on the margins. Neuromancer is dense, atmospheric science fiction, full of sharp edges and ideas that demand your attention.

3. The Stand

Stephen King

A devastating pandemic sets the stage for an enormous story about survival, community, and the conflict between good and evil. For all its apocalyptic scale, The Stand makes room for the people caught in it: their fears, loyalties, and choices give the story its weight.

4. Watership Down

Richard Adams

A group of rabbits searching for a new home becomes an adventure about courage, leadership, and belonging. Watership Down gives its characters their own stories, language, and traditions, making their world feel rich and complete. There is real danger here, alongside friendship and hope.

5. Shōgun

James Clavell

An English sailor and his Dutch crew wash ashore in feudal Japan and becomes caught in a struggle for power they barely understand. Shōgun is an expansive historical novel built around clashing cultures, shifting loyalties, and patient political maneuvering. Understanding the people around him matters as much as surviving the next threat.

Honorable Mention: The Bad Place

Dean Koontz

A man with gaps in his memory turns to private investigators for help, opening the door to a deeply strange and frightening mystery. The Bad Place blends suspense and horror with the bizarre. It sits just outside my top five, but I couldn't leave it out.
